November’s Membership Program is “Bats in Winter” with Karen Blejwas . Karen will focus on the winter ecology of Western little brown bats which have a very different hibernation strategy than their eastern counterparts. She will provide an overview of where they are found hibernating in the Juneau area, describe how that differs from where they hibernate in the East, and discuss the implications for other aspects of their ecology, as well as for the spread and severity of white-nose syndrome (WNS), a devastating fungal disease that attacks hibernating bats.
